Health Benefits of Garlic

Garlic is good for your heart and may help prevent certain kinds of cancer: We’ve been hearing that for years. More good news: a study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry suggests that combining garlic with whole grains may help boost the absorption of the grains’ iron and zinc, minerals that help shuttle oxygen to cells and keep your immune system healthy, respectively. (So say yes to ­extra-garlicky sauce on that whole-grain pasta!) Researchers don’t know what exactly in the garlic is responsible for amping up mineral absorption but suspect sulfur compounds, good-for-you substances that, um, also cause bad breath. Fortunately, picking the right beverage can help: research shows that having milk before, or with, a garlicky meal reduces odorous breath. Or try green tea: it contains compounds called polyphenols that break down smelly sulfur compounds.

Healthy Tip: Let garlic sit for 10 minutes after chopping to release more anticancer ­benefits.
